About the shop.

Picnic by the lake.

Skagit Valley Larder is a wine shop, cut-to-order cheese counter & cafe located in the heart of Downtown Mount Vernon, aka “Tulip Town.”

“Larder” is an old-fashioned word for the room or cabinet where you store your food. It used to be where we kept our bacon (and lard), whereas now it’s the pantry where you keep potato chips and cereal.

Since our location at 513 South 1st Street was actually a cheese shop back in the Seventies, this nod to the past was completely natural.

This shop brings together the essentials for gatherings under one roof, and we aim to curate a selection of hard-to-find products - both from the bounty around us here in our little valley by the sea, but also across the seas from makers who simply know what they’re doing.

Wine, Vermouth, Sake & etc. I believe it’s a wonderful time to be a wine lover - novice or connoisseur alike. There are so many expressions available, and I would say above all, these shelves beg of you to try new things. While offering a set of well-executed classics to leap from, you’ll find that our selection focuses on small & independent producers, native varietals and uniquely diverse expressions. This, in and of itself is vastly important for the future and sustainability of wine.

Cheese & Charcuterie Skagit Valley Larder has one of the only cut-to-order cheese counters north of Seattle. The selection here really leans into the depth of artisan makers in the United States with a mostly domestic array. Of course, there are some hard-to-beat classics from Europe.

ABOUT THE OWNER

I wrote my college thesis about the French term “Terroir.” I worked on the opening team of Beecher’s Handmade Cheese in New York City. Started the Slow Food chapter at the New School. Trained for one night at Daniel Boulud’s “Daniel” on 65th Street (fine dining wasn’t my thing). Got written up in Brides Magazine. Pulled tables up fire escapes and ordered petting zoos for birthday parties. Once, I even bumped into David Schwimmer in the catering kitchen. And? I freaking made wedding cakes out of cheese wheels! And I have loved all of it!

With my collective experience in wine (7 years), cheese (4 years), & events (6 years), I realized the dream of owning this shop had been there all along. I’m so excited to bring all of my creative (and delicious) passions to the table, and offer up the best of the best for your gatherings.
